Insurance & Benefits

What if I Can’t Afford Counselling?

If these rates feel like they are out of reach, please do not let this discourage you from prioritizing your mental health. If you have insurance benefits, we encourage you to check the details as psychotherapy may be covered. If you do not have benefits, the Counselling Collaborative of Waterloo Region provides affordable counselling at a rate that will prevent counselling from becoming a financial burden.

Counselling can be expensive. The fact that it is one of the most vital elements of your overall well-being has not persuaded the powers that be to include talk therapy in the coverage available through OHIP. This means that you bear the weight of funding your counselling sessions. Fortunately, your insurance benefits likely provide some relief in this expense.

Whether through your university/college or through your employer, we recommend that you reference your benefits package to determine what amount is available for your mental healthcare. Also, pay particular attention to the specialists that are covered within your benefits package. Some benefits may cover talk therapy, but only provided by social workers and psychologists (for example).

Affordable counselling is still within reach to those without insurance benefits as well! Amazing organizations within the community provide affordable counselling on a sliding scale. The Counselling Collaborative of Waterloo Region is a collection of nonprofit organizations across the region that work together to meet the needs of our community. These organizations include:

We actively encourage you to speak to your counsellor if your sessions become unaffordable. The last thing we want is to have your care disrupted due to your financial situation.
